Ethnic funding supports over 32 language programs at 1CMS

July 25, 2022

About 60,000 people in Canberra’s households speak a language other than English demonstrating the important role Canberra’s Multicultural broadcasting service, 1CMS, plays in connecting these communities.

In recent years, CBF funding has supported over 32 ethnic language programs at 1CMS including a new Korean language program and new multicultural program.

My Little Culture Shock is a 30-minute weekly program that focuses on the cultural differences surrounding people’s lives. It covers topics from big policy decision-making to the issues affecting families and has become a platform for people from multicultural backgrounds to share their experiences.

Since early 2020, the station has also played a vital role disseminating pandemic-related information to ethnic communities. CBF funding helped them purchase infrastructure and recording equipment so they could pre-record content for most programs. The funding also supported training for volunteers and staff, particularly in governance and social media.
